Very disappointing to say the least ! I suppose i was lured to this book ( i suspect many were ) by Bill O'reilly's name headlining the cover. Only the forward was written by O'reilly. Anyone who has had even a mild interest in western folklore will find very little new or interesting in this book. The lack of in depth research and analysis is glaring and fails completely in keeping your interest. Sorry to say i paid the full price of $16.99 when this was not worth bottom E Book price of .99 cents. In a word - Boring - A gold rush of old west all-stars, including Jesse James, Billy the Kid, Doc Holliday, Wild Bill Hickok, and Bass Reeves (the real Lone Ranger). After reading most of the "Killing" series from Bill O'Reilly and Martin Dugard, I think the bar was set unfairly high on this one. This is a great book in its own right, but it is not written in the same style as the previous O'Reilly series. More factual than action-based, I enjoyed the biographical sketches that were provided on each subject, focusing on each notorious old west figure's early life and last days, and I learned something about each person presented that I did not previously know. There were even a couple of chapters on Daniel Boone and David Crockett, whom I had previously not considered as part of the wild west, thought they were certainly the oldest of the old west. For many modern-day readers, I'd venture to say that most are casual fans of the old west, knowing many of the big names, without knowing much of their true stories. This book is a great opportunity to find out what you've been missing, and the tales are also an invitation to continue learning about the ones you find most compelling. One of the treasures of this book was learning the unique motivations of each outlaw or hero and how their reputations became larger than the real person who was just trying to survive. Some of the villains had heroic moments. And some of the heroes had a dark side. All of them live on almost 150 years later through legends and lies, and this book attempts to bring those tales to the surface for the reader to decide. I'd love to hear the book narrated by Robert Stack, because there's definitely an "Unsolved Mysteries" tone to the writing that is endearing.
